New Age Music - A Brief History
Maybe it had to do with coming from the generation of Peace and Love, or maybe it was a reflection of our wanting to leave the stresses of urban life and find a more spiritual experience in nature, but in the 1970's, those of us who were pioneering the New Age music genre were inspired to create a music that reflected our spiritual yearnings and that would take us into meditative states of consciousness. In our spiritual seeking and musical explorations, we were strongly influenced by the long tones and slow rhythms of the East. We were also into composing as we played, interacting with fellow musicians, creating ‘music of the moment to take you beyond time.’
We founded our own company, Soundings of the Planet, 25 years ago based on the vision of carrying the message of the earth and for that reason we sought out the wild places on the planet and included the natural sounds from the various ecosystems with our peaceful music. This inspiration came to us directly from our contacts with Native American medicine people and wisdom keepers.
It wasn't long before we began to receive letters and testimonials from people attesting to the healing effects of our music and that was an unexpected bonus of our creating music from the spirit. We had originally endeavored to create a peaceful, musical experience for people, especially urban dwellers, that would get them in touch with the vibration of the earth and they would then be inspired to make decisions that affected the planet in a positive way. That was our original vision of creating Peace Through Music.
