Soundings of the Classroom

Soothing music can bring states of deep relaxation and concentration to the classroom allowing for greater creativity and receptivity to learning as well as connecting the students to the subject matter on a sensory level. These Soundings of the Planet titles are great tools for teachers to use, either to calm anxiety and excitement in the classroom, to inspire creativity for art projects, or to use as an experiential learning tool for science and cultural education.

Ocean Dreams: Soothing music combined with whale singing, dolphin calls, shore birds and the sound of the surf invokes a mood of peace while highlighting the orchestra of the ocean’s animal kingdom. This album is a perfect accompaniment to ocean and shore eco-system education.

Desert Moon Song: This album follows the sounds of an entire day in the desert. Coupled with soft tranquil music, the journey begins with a coyote on a full moon night, moving to dawn as the desert awakens. A Hopi elder sings a rain chant, bringing an afternoon monsoon. Dusk ends the day with a chorus of mating frogs. Makes a great accompaniment to the study of desert eco-systems and of native cultures of the Southwestern United States.

Peaceful Pond: A multitude of birdcalls highlights the diversity of a natural wetland on this album. Soft flute, harp, and cello harmonize with nature’s song of ducks, sparrows, crows, crickets, and frogs. Use for the study of swamp and wetland eco-systems.

Forest Rain: A soft rumble of thunder in the distance and the soothing sound of rainfall in a lush forest, begins the album as it traces the journey of water. From a deep forest rain, through streams and rivers, down the valley to the sea, the water returns to its source as it rises to the sky and falls as rain once again. This album is a perfect illustration of the water cycle, and old growth forest habitat, and includes the elusive call of the endangered Spotted Owl.

Eco-Sampler Video: A visual collage from earth’s many faces this video combines the best of Soundings of the Planet’s recordings with images from four distinct eco-systems: forest, ocean, desert, and wetland. The images, taken from all over the globe, feature the rich diversity of animals and plants in each eco-system, cycles of weather, water, birth and death- the cycle of life. The video is a great visual tool for the classroom, illustrating the concepts of climates, eco-systems, bio-diversity, and weather patterns.

Native Healing: Lummi Indian elder Cha-das-ska-dum shares authentic Native American healing chants, along with flute and drum, which emerge from the depths of the earth carrying the mystery and magic of tribal people. This album makes a perfect companion to the study of Native American cultures and native cultures of the Pacific Northwest.

Arctic Refuge: A collaboration of song and chant this album features Native American artists and friends from tribes all over North America, including the well known native flute artist R. Carlos Nakai. Their songs combined with sounds of wildlife that call the arctic home, speak to the richness and diversity of this unique and threatened land. All net profits from the sale of this album go to programs dedicated to preserving the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Arctic Refuge is a rich album to bring to a classroom discussion of natural resource consumption, and to the study of North American Native cultures.
