HEALING THE HOLY LAND
An exquisite synthesis of cultures bringing together Jewish, Christian and Muslim music of the Middle East. This deeply moving collection of sacred chants and songs reflects a common yearning for peace shared by these three faiths, all descended from Abraham. A refreshing breath of harmony from a part of our world that is full of conflict.

It is with gratitude and appreciation to these wonderful artists that we present these songs of peace and healing that come from the heart of their faith.
Here is more background, lyrics and artist credits for the tracks. Since most of the songs are in other languages, we include the translations here.

Track 1 - PEACE SONG (4:38) by Halla Bassam & Sevara Nazarkhan

A haunting Iraqi lullabay sung by Halla Bassam of Iraq reflecting the yearning for peace of a Muslim mother. Sevara Nazarkhan of Usbekistan joins in with the English translation in a tender pairing of cultural resonances. This lullaby, written during the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s, was recorded in Iraq just before another war began in 2003.
Oud by Ahmed Sleem, also from Iraq.

Produced by Erik Hillestad. Composer: Knut Reiersrud.

Peace to the world
Peace to my country, my love
Peace to your dreams
Peace to your children
Peace to your children
Underneath the whispering trees
Where our sons and daughters are free

In the beauty we will see
Through your eyes of peace
Peace to our heart
Peace to our homeland
Peace to the heart
Peace to my country - my love

Say Allah Allah, Don't hurt another
He's the Lord of the World
Say His name over & over
Those who make ornaments of lies erase truth
Those who lie encounter hardship
Walk the ways of truth, don't hurt another
Say the name of the One Lord of the World
Broken mirrors can be mended, Broken hearts cannot
When love's trust is broken
Don't be cruel, Don't hurt another
Say the name of the One Lord of the World

Track 5 - LORD'S PRAYER IN ARAMAIC (3:32) by Rafe Pearlman

Recorded live at Unity Church (Seattle, WA)
Rafe Pearlman lifts his voice and passionately communes with the ''Cosmic Birther'' in the original language that Jesus spoke. Listening to Rafe's heartfelt prayer, one almost feels able to connect with the essence of the Christ spirit in its reaching out to God. Accompanied with only a tamboura, Rafe's unadorned voice touches a place deep inside.

Reprinted with permission from Prayers of the Cosmos: Meditations on the Aramaic Words of Jesus (Harper Collins, 1990).

Translation:

O Birther! Father-Mother of the Cosmos
you create all that moves in light.
Focus your light within us--make it useful:
as the rays of a beacon show the way.
Create your reign of unity now--
through our firey hearts and willing hands.
Your one desire then acts with ours,
as in all light, so in all forms.

Grant what we need each day in bread and insight:
subsistence for the call of growing life.
Loose the cords of mistakes binding us,
as we release the strands we hold of others' guilt.
Don't let us enter forgetfulness.
But free us from unripeness.
From you is born all ruling will, the power and the life to do,
the song that beautifies all, from age to age it renews.
Truly--power to these statements-- may they be the source from which all my actions grow.
Sealed in trust & faith. Amen.

Translation:

In the forest there's a light
And the clouds are crying priests
All the love that flows through now
Is witnessed by the trees.
Waves are laughing in the sea,
Fish or birds they chose to be
Insects' webs, our words and thoughts echo in the wind,
When God is everything you see,
Then everywhere you will see God.

Man, the earth, a womb, the sun,
Water, bread and children grow.
Time for peace between all these
Is all you ask to know.
When God is everything you see,
Then everywhere you will see God.
There's a kingdom in the world
To be seen from the inside
When a heart forgives itself,
There's no need to hide.
When God is everything you see,
Then everywhere you will see God.
Life and death - strong and weak
It's just the one who plays hide'n seek.

Translation:

Christ, thou art life, thee who was laid in a grave,
Legions of angels praise they incarnation in awe.
(Glory be to the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost, now and forever more, Amen)
We praise thee, thou art the Word.
Lord over all, together with the Father and the Holy Ghost
We glorify thy Holy Sepulchre.
It is right to praise thee, thou who giveth life,
Thou spreadeth thine arms on the cross and defeateth the enemy.
To save the essence of the mortal. I have martyred myself.
Therefore blame not Yourself so severely, Mother.
(Glory be to the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost, now and forever more, Amen.)

Track 10 - IN PRAISE OF MARY (5:45) by Peregrine Medieval Vocal Ensemble

These two chants to Mary the Compassionate evoke the historic Christian role in the complex dynamics of interfaith challenges and healing possibilities in the Middle East. Divine wisdom (in Greek 'Sophia') is a powerful presence in Eastern Christianity. In the West, Gregorian chant has sprung from the fertile soil of monastic spirituality which is in its own way a repository of the wisdom of the heart, the wisdom of contemplation. In Christianity, the icon of compassion is Mary who made the choice to open herself so that the higher order of compassion could be available to the world.

Peregrine Medieval Vocal Ensemble sings Gregorian chant for meditation and prayer at contemplative concerts, liturgies, and interfaith events. They are Artists-in-Residence at St. Mark's Cathedral in Seattle and are affiliated with the Center for Sacred Art, an independent multi-faith organization dedicated to exploring the heart, mind, and spirit of sacred art.

Track 11 - Peace Piece (4:42) by Dean & Dudley Evenson

Sound healing pioneers, Dean and Dudley Evenson, founded their record label, Soundings of the Planet in 1979 with the inspiration of expressing the essence and spirit of nature and of sharing 'Peace Through Music.' They have worked tirelessly since then to create music and media that reflect their mission.

This track is a meditative piece which is a prayer for peace in the Middle East and among all the cultures and faiths of our world. The Evensons see the Holy Land as more than a particular place in the Middle East but as all places on Earth where the spirit abides. Holy land is holy ground everywhere on earth. All people are precious and united with all other people. Peace is possible when we recognize our universal oneness. With its open arrangement, the song allows the listeners to join in with their own chants and prayers along with the music.

Track 12 - Allahu Allelujah (7:00) by Gina Salá

Gina Salá is a versatile singer, teacher and composer with a repertoire spanning 21 languages.
In this track she weaves together ancient and modern languages of the Middle East reflecting prayers and sentiments from the Abrahamic traditions (Muslim, Jewish and Christian) which speak in similar tongues of unity and peace and love for all.
Produced by Gina Salá. Vocals by Gina Salá. Features Oud by Palestinian musician, Hanna Eady.

Of the music she says -

''This song wasn't exactly made by me. It was actually making me. Healing and peace in the Holy Land is something I've longed for and prayed for, but as I heard news and my friends told me firsthand stories of life there, it became difficult to imagine. So I kept singing, and I kept praying - going into the desert of my own heart.

The song took shape as faith and love grew in me like a child. Somehow along the way, my heart broke open and a fountain of tender love poured forth. This love, called by many names including names of the Divine, is all-powerful and recognizes every one as Beloved. It is miraculous, and is bigger than our histories and our hurts. It shines through our hearts even when we can't imagine how. This Love is what is bringing peace and healing to all hearts.''
